Tbilisi stretches for many kilometres along the valley of the Mtkvari River, known in other languages as the Kura. The river cuts a winding course through the city and hills rise steeply on both sides, so the map is long and narrow, with streets stacked in terraces above the water and bridges stitching the two banks together.
The name comes from the Georgian word for warm, a reference to the sulphur springs that still feed the domed bathhouses of Abanotubani in the old town. Above them, Narikala fortress runs along a ridge, and across the river the curving glass Bridge of Peace links the old town with Rike Park. Rustaveli Avenue runs northwest from Freedom Square as the city's main axis.

Narikala and the old town
The fortress walls follow a ridge above the sulphur baths, and below them the old town's short, twisting lanes form the densest texture on the map.
