Thaba-Tseka is a district capital in the mountains of central Lesotho, set high on a plateau among the Maloti ranges. The town itself is small. On the map, a modest cluster of streets and buildings sits in a large expanse of open highland, and a few roads snake away along ridges and down into valleys.
The map's character comes from the terrain rather than the town. Roads here cannot run straight. They switch back up slopes and follow contours. Rivers cut narrow, winding channels that head toward the Senqu system. Away from the centre, the landscape breaks up into scattered villages and tracks that follow the mountain grazing land.
The district is also home to Katse Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which sends water from these mountains to South Africa. Contour-following roads
Access roads twist along ridges and valley sides instead of running direct. They draw long, curving lines that leave the town in several directions.
