Thanh Hóa lies in north-central Vietnam, on the coastal plain just south of the Red River Delta region. The Mã River flows past the city's northern side toward the sea, and the flat land lets the city spread in a fairly regular pattern of streets and new districts, with rice fields and villages at its edges.
North of the centre, the Hàm Rồng Bridge crosses the Mã River at a narrow point between hills. It became known during the Vietnam War, when it withstood repeated attacks. The wider province also contains the Citadel of the Hồ Dynasty, a fourteenth-century stone fortress listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
