Thanneermukkom lies on the shores of Vembanad Lake in Kerala, in the backwater region between Alappuzha and Kottayam. From above, the map is dominated by water: the broad lake, narrow canals and the paddy fields reclaimed from the lake, with houses and roads following strips of higher ground.
The village is known for the Thanneermukkom Bund, a long barrier across Vembanad Lake built to keep seawater out of the Kuttanad paddy fields during the dry season. It is often described as the largest mud regulator in India, and it has shaped both farming and ecology in the area.
