Thoen is the southernmost district of Lampang province in northern Thailand. Its town sits in the valley of the Wang River, which flows south here toward Tak. From above, the settlement follows the river and the main north–south highway. The streets are compact and practical, laid out in a narrow band. Rice fields fill the flat valley floor.
On either side, the ground rises into forested hills, and the map shows the change sharply. Roads end or start to wind as soon as the terrain gets steep. Because Thoen is on the main route between central Thailand and the north, many travellers know it as a stop on a long drive. Its plan still has the scale of a small riverside town.
