Tikhvin lies in the east of Leningrad Oblast, on the small Tikhvinka River. The map reveals an old town that grew around a riverside monastery, with streets following the bends of the water and a pond near the centre. To the north and east, newer districts with larger housing blocks extend across flat forested land.
The Tikhvin Assumption Monastery, founded in the sixteenth century, is home to the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God, one of the most revered icons in Russia. The town is also the birthplace of the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, whose family house is now a museum.
