Tosno lies in Leningrad Oblast, southeast of St Petersburg, on the main transport corridor to Moscow. The town's layout follows two strong lines: the railway between the two capitals and the highway running parallel to it. Between and around them, residential districts, apartment blocks and private houses fill the flat ground, while the Tosna river winds through the town in loose curves.
The river gives the town its name and its only natural curves on an otherwise level, forested landscape. Tosno is also the centre of its district, and much of its growth has come from its position on this route. Trains and traffic pass through constantly, linking it to both St Petersburg and the rest of the country.

The river bends through the town in a series of loose curves. It is the one soft, natural line in an otherwise straight, orderly plan.
