Towson is the county seat of Baltimore County, just north of the Baltimore city line, and it is not incorporated as a city. On the map, York Road runs north to south through the middle. In the centre it meets other main roads at a large traffic circle, and the commercial core has grown up around that junction.
Towson University covers a large area on the southern side of town. Its buildings, playing fields and parking lots appear on the map as broad, open shapes. Goucher College is close by. North of the centre, the Baltimore Beltway curves across the landscape, and quieter neighbourhoods fill the gaps with winding streets and wooded lots.
