Toyama lies on a broad plain between Toyama Bay and the Tateyama Mountains, and on clear days the peaks form a white wall behind the city. The map itself is mostly flat and open: the Jinzū River runs north to the bay along the western side of the centre, and the old castle grounds sit near the middle, surrounded by a grid of streets.
North of the centre, the Fugan Canal runs toward the port area, with Kansui Park at its southern end. Tram lines loop through the downtown streets and extend toward the coast.
