Tuban lies on the northern coast of East Java, and the map makes its tie to the sea obvious. The town hugs the shoreline, and the main coastal road runs east to west through its centre. Behind it, the street network spreads inland across flat land, broken up by fields and ponds, and limestone hills rise further south.
In earlier centuries, Tuban was one of the important harbour towns on Java's north coast, trading across the Java Sea. It is also linked to Sunan Bonang, one of the Wali Songo credited with spreading Islam on Java. His tomb near the town centre draws many pilgrims. The Bengawan Solo, Java's longest river, flows through the wider regency.
