Tuymazy is a town in the west of Bashkortostan, in the hilly country between the Volga and the Ural Mountains. On a map it shows the structure of a planned Soviet town: long straight avenues, large residential blocks set around open courtyards, and industrial areas at the edges, all laid out in a river valley.
The town grew with the Tuymazy oil field, discovered in the 1930s and one of the major early oil fields of the Volga–Ural region. The industry shaped its layout, and pipelines, rail lines and roads connect it to the surrounding oil settlements and farmland.
