Überlingen lies on the northern shore of the Überlinger See, the long north-western arm of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg. The lake fills the lower part of the map, and the town rises from the promenade up a hillside. The old town is a compact knot of narrow lanes, ringed by the former town moat, which has been turned into a series of gardens.
The late-Gothic Minster of St Nicholas stands at the heart of the old town, and parts of the medieval fortifications still survive. Überlingen is also a spa town. In 2021 it hosted the Baden-Württemberg state garden show, which reshaped parts of the lakefront. The Baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau and the pile-dwelling museum at Unteruhldingen are just along the shore.

The former town moat around the old centre has been turned into gardens, and its curving green ring is easy to trace around the tight medieval lanes.
