Urucuia is a municipality in the northwest of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the wide, open landscape of the cerrado and the sertão. The town takes its name from the Urucuia river, a tributary of the São Francisco, whose valley runs through this sparsely populated region. The river also appears in the writing of João Guimarães Rosa, whose novel Grande Sertão: Veredas is set in this broader landscape.
The town is compact, with a regular grid of blocks around a central square and church. From above, it stands out clearly in the middle of large farmland and savanna, with long unpaved roads leading across the plateau toward farms and neighbouring towns.
