Varel lies in the Friesland district of Lower Saxony, on the southwestern shore of the Jade Bight, the large tidal bay of the North Sea. On a map the town centre sits a little inland, with streets gathered around the old church, while a canal-like channel leads out to the harbour and the dykes that separate the land from the mudflats of the Wadden Sea.
Varel's harbour, reached through a narrow tidal inlet, gives the map a distinctive line out toward the bay. Just to the north is Dangast, the town's seaside resort, known for its small beach, its long-standing artists' connections and its views across the Jade. Around both, the flat marshland is divided into long, narrow fields by drainage ditches.
