Varna curves around a bay on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. The city centre lies on the northern shore, and the Sea Garden, a long seaside park, runs along the waterfront. West of the centre, Lake Varna stretches inland. Canals connect it to the sea, and the port and industrial zones line their banks.
Asparuhov Bridge carries the coastal road high above the canal, linking the centre with the southern districts. To the north, resort zones and villa neighbourhoods continue along the coast towards Golden Sands.
The city is layered with history. It was the Greek colony of Odessos and later a Roman port, and large Roman baths survive in the centre. In 1972 a necropolis on the western edge of town yielded gold objects dated to around 4500 BC, among the oldest worked gold ever found.

Lake Varna and canals
A large lake lies west of the city, connected to the bay by canals. Port facilities line the water, giving the map a strong horizontal axis.
