Vianen sits on the south bank of the Lek, opposite Nieuwegein and just south of Utrecht. For centuries it was an independent lordship under the Brederode family. Since 2019 it has been part of the municipality of Vijfheerenlanden. From above, the historic town is an easily recognisable rectangle: a compact grid enclosed by the lines of its former fortifications.
The wide Voorstraat runs through the middle of the old town and ends at the Lekpoort, the surviving town gate. Outside the old walls, newer neighbourhoods, water channels and polder land spread out. The A2 motorway crosses the Lek on a large bridge beside the town.

The Voorstraat
The main street is unusually wide and runs through the centre toward the Lekpoort. It forms a strong axis inside the small grid.

The river runs along the town's northern edge, and the motorway bridge crosses it nearby. Together they give the map a bold horizontal line and a clear diagonal.
