Viareggio lies on the Versilia coast of Tuscany, on flat land between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apuan Alps. From above, the town is laid out in a regular grid running parallel to the shore, with the long seafront Passeggiata forming its western edge. Pine woods border the town to the north and south, and the Burlamacca canal cuts through to the harbour.
The town is famous for its Carnival, one of the most celebrated in Italy, with enormous papier-mâché floats paraded along the seafront. The Passeggiata is lined with Liberty-style buildings from the early twentieth century. Torre del Lago, on Lake Massaciuccoli where Puccini lived, is part of the municipality.
