Vila Velha lies on the southern side of the bay facing Vitória, the capital of Espírito Santo. From above, its long sandy shoreline runs south past the beaches of Praia da Costa and Itapuã. Behind them sits a dense grid of residential streets, and granite hills rise out of the flat ground here and there.
The Terceira Ponte, a tall bridge across the bay, joins Vila Velha to Vitória. It is one of the strongest lines on the map. Inland, the city spreads across lower, wetter ground, with rivers and channels cutting through neighbourhoods on their way to the sea.
Founded in 1535, Vila Velha is the oldest city in Espírito Santo. The Convento da Penha, a sixteenth-century convent, stands on a steep hill above the bay and has become a symbol of the state. A Vila Velha map poster shows the beaches, the bay and the hills together, all in one frame.
