Villach sits on a wide stretch of the Drau, and on a map the river is the first thing you notice, curving through the middle of the city with bridges stitching the two banks together. The old centre gathers around a long main square close to the water, while railway lines fan out across the flatter ground, a reminder that the city has long been one of the key rail junctions in southern Austria.
It is the second-largest city in Carinthia and lies a short drive from both the Italian and Slovenian borders.
