Vĩnh Yên lies north-west of Hanoi, on the edge of the Red River delta where the plain begins to meet the hills. The town's most distinctive feature from above is Đầm Vạc, a large lake whose irregular shoreline reaches into the urban area. Streets and new districts have grown up around its edges.
For many years Vĩnh Yên was the capital of Vĩnh Phúc province, and it has grown quickly with the arrival of industrial parks and new residential areas. To the north, the Tam Đảo range rises above the plain, and the hill station of Tam Đảo is a popular escape from summer heat in the lowlands.
