Vitória do Mearim sits on the banks of the Mearim, one of the major rivers of Maranhão, in the lowland region known as the Baixada Maranhense. The land here is very flat and floods for part of the year. From above, the town is a compact grid next to the river, surrounded by a landscape where the boundaries between water and ground change with the seasons.
The Baixada is known for its wide floodplain lakes and grasslands, which spread out during the rainy months and shrink back in the dry season. Life in Vitória do Mearim has long been tied to the river, to fishing and to the use of these seasonally flooded fields. A road connects the town with others in the region, but the Mearim remains its most important feature.
