Vitória do Xingu is in the state of Pará in northern Brazil, close to the lower course of the Xingu, one of the great southern tributaries of the Amazon. The town's street grid is small and regular, set among waterways and large areas of forest and cleared land. On a map the settlement is a neat, compact block against a much larger and looser landscape.
The municipality is best known for its part in the Belo Monte hydroelectric project, one of the largest in Brazil, whose main powerhouse is on its territory. The dam and its works changed the flow of the river and the surrounding landscape, and they brought new roads and infrastructure to what had been a quiet river town.
