Volnovakha lies in the southern part of Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, on open steppe. The town grew around a railway junction, and from above the tracks remain its main organising line. Streets run parallel and perpendicular to the railway in a mostly regular grid, with the station area at the heart of the plan.
Beyond the built area, the map opens into wide farmland divided by straight field roads and shelter belts of trees. The town was heavily damaged during the fighting in 2022, and much of what stood there was destroyed. A map records the street layout itself, the pattern of blocks and roads as people remember it.
