Vratsa lies in northwestern Bulgaria at the foot of the Vrachanska Planina, a limestone range of the Balkan Mountains. On the map the city spreads north from the mountains onto the plain, while to the south the streets end abruptly against steep ground and forest.
The Leva River flows out of the mountains through the Vratsata gorge, a narrow cleft between high cliffs just above the city, and then runs through the town. The centre has a mix of older streets and planned socialist-era blocks, with the main road leaving the city through the gorge toward the mountains.
The mountains nearby hold the Ledenika cave, and the city is closely associated with the poet and revolutionary Hristo Botev, whose monument stands in the centre. A Vratsa map poster shows the meeting of city and mountain, with the gorge as a clear gateway.

Mountain edge
