Warren sits in Macomb County, directly north of Detroit, and its map is almost a diagram of Michigan's mile-road system. Eight Mile Road forms the southern boundary. The numbered mile roads to the north cross major north-south routes such as Van Dyke and Mound Road, dividing the city into large squares filled with tight residential streets.
The city grew quickly in the mid-twentieth century with the automotive industry. It is home to the General Motors Technical Center, a modernist campus designed by Eero Saarinen, and to the Detroit Arsenal, which houses the US Army's tank and vehicle command. Large factory sites and rail lines still stand out among the neighbourhoods.
