Wauwatosa lies immediately west of Milwaukee, and its streets continue the city's grid across the county line. What sets its map apart is the Menomonee River, which winds south through the city in a green corridor of parks and parkways. The river and its wooded banks cut the regular blocks into irregular sections.
The historic centre, known as the Village, grew up where the river met the old roads west of Milwaukee. Tosa, as locals call it, also includes the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center on the old County Grounds and the Mayfair shopping centre. It is home to Frank Lloyd Wright's Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, whose domed, circular design is one of his late works.
