Weil am Rhein sits in the far south-west of Germany, on the right bank of the Rhine, directly next to Basel. Borders define its map: the river forms the line with France to the west, and the Swiss city presses in from the south. Rail yards, motorways and residential districts fill the flat land by the river, while vineyard slopes rise to the east.
The town is known internationally for the Vitra Campus, a group of design and architecture buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando and others. On the map the campus appears as a distinct cluster of large, unusual footprints. The pedestrian and cycle bridge to Huningue crosses the river in a single long span. It is a thin but striking line connecting Germany and France.
