Weingarten lies in Upper Swabia, a short distance north of Lake Constance, and grows directly into its larger neighbour Ravensburg along the Schussen valley. On a map the two towns form a single continuous fabric, but Weingarten has its own clear focus: the Martinsberg, the hill where the former Benedictine abbey and its basilica stand above the streets below.
The Basilica of St. Martin is often described as the largest Baroque church in Germany, and its enormous cruciform footprint and the long ranges of the abbey buildings are among the most striking shapes on the map. Around them, the older centre is compact and slightly irregular, while later housing, schools and university buildings spread over the slopes and down toward the valley floor.
Each year, on the day after Ascension, the town hosts the Blutritt, a mounted procession honouring a relic of the Holy Blood and among the largest of its kind in Europe. A Weingarten map poster captures the setting of that procession, from the basilica hill down into the streets it winds through.

Toward the south the streets run without a break into Ravensburg, so a wider frame shows two historic towns joined into one urban area along the valley.
