Welk’īt’ē sits in the green highlands south-west of Addis Ababa. Its main road runs through the town, and a looser network of streets and neighbourhoods branches off into the surrounding slopes. On the map, the central strip is the densest part, while newer areas and small farms spread outward along the hillsides.
The town is the administrative centre of the Gurage Zone and an important market town for the region's farming communities. It is also home to Wolkite University, founded in the early 2010s, which has brought new buildings and students to the town. Its growth reflects the wider expansion of regional centres across Ethiopia.
