Westonaria lies on the West Rand, south-west of Johannesburg, on the flat, open highveld. It grew up as a service town for the gold mines, and the map still reflects that. Planned residential areas sit near large mining properties, and there are wide spaces between the different parts of the town.
Near the town and around it, the surface bears the marks of mining. Shafts, rail spurs, processing sites and tailings dams create large, geometric shapes that look almost abstract from above. Townships and informal settlements have grown alongside the older suburbs, so the built-up area is spread out across the landscape.
