Westport lies on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound, in Fairfield County, roughly an hour or so from New York City. From above, its southern edge is a complicated shoreline of beaches, points, marshes and coves. The Saugatuck River cuts inland through the middle of town as a wide tidal estuary.
Away from the water, Westport is a wooded town of winding roads and large lots rather than a grid. Downtown sits along the Saugatuck. I-95 and the Metro-North railroad cross the southern part of town, and the Merritt Parkway runs through the north, following its own curving path.
