Wickford is a town in south Essex, in the borough of Basildon, sitting on the upper reaches of the River Crouch. Here the river is still narrow and winding, far from the broad estuary it becomes further east, and on the map it slips quietly through the town among parks and green corridors.
Wickford is also a railway junction. The line from London Liverpool Street toward Southend passes through, and the branch to Southminster along the Crouch valley separates here, so two sets of tracks leave the station in different directions. Around them, a traditional high street gives way to twentieth-century housing estates of curving roads and cul-de-sacs.
