Winchester sits at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley, often described as the oldest city west of the Blue Ridge. Its eighteenth-century plan still shapes the centre: a rectangular grid of streets around Loudoun Street, part of which is now a brick pedestrian mall lined with historic buildings.
The city's past runs deep. A young George Washington kept a surveying and military office here, and during the Civil War Winchester changed hands between Union and Confederate forces many times.
