Winter Haven lies in Polk County in central Florida, in a landscape dotted with lakes. The city is known for its Chain of Lakes, a group of lakes connected by canals, and on a map the water is everywhere. Round and oval lakes interrupt the street grid in every direction, so the neighbourhoods curve and bend to fit between them.
The downtown sits on a more regular grid of blocks, with citrus groves and later suburbs spreading out from there. For decades the area was known for Cypress Gardens, one of Florida's early theme parks, whose site on Lake Eloise is now home to Legoland Florida.
