Winter Park is just north of Orlando, in Florida's lake country. Water shapes its map. A chain of lakes, including Virginia, Osceola and Maitland, is linked by narrow canals, and the streets bend around the shorelines. Between the lakes, tree-lined residential streets form an irregular grid.
The town was laid out in the 1880s as a winter resort. Its planned centre on Park Avenue still faces a long green strip of park beside the railway. Rollins College has a lakefront campus on Lake Virginia, and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum holds a major collection of work by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
