Wołomin sits on the flat Mazovian plain a short distance northeast of Warsaw. Its shape is organised around the railway that runs from the capital toward Białystok. The tracks cut diagonally through the town, and a grid of residential streets fills the land on either side. Farther out, the streets loosen into single-family neighbourhoods, then fields and patches of woodland.
The area has a place in twentieth-century history. In August 1920 the fighting of the Battle of Warsaw reached the villages of the surrounding county, including Ossów. In 1944 armoured battles were fought nearby as the front approached the capital. Today the town is part of Warsaw's commuter belt, and the map shows it in its compact, orderly street layout.
