Wuzhou stands where the Gui River flows into the Xi River, close to the border between Guangxi and Guangdong. The map is dominated by water. Broad rivers split the city into separate banks, and green hills rise directly behind the built-up areas, so neighbourhoods are pressed into narrow strips of flatter land along the shore.
For centuries Wuzhou was a gateway on the river route between inland Guangxi and the Pearl River Delta, and much of its trade moved by boat. The old town is known for its qilou, arcaded shophouses with covered walkways at street level, built partly because of regular floods. Several bridges now link the districts on either side of the rivers.
