Wyszków lies in Mazovia, northeast of Warsaw, on the right bank of the Bug River. The river is the town's defining feature: it sweeps past in a wide curve, with sandy banks and meadows on the far side, and a road bridge carries traffic across. On a map the old centre sits close to the water, with newer residential districts spreading away from it.
The town is surrounded by the pine woods of the Biała Forest, which appear as large, quiet blocks of green on the map. Wyszków has a place in Polish history: in 1920, during the Polish-Soviet War, it briefly hosted the Soviet-backed Provisional Polish Revolutionary Committee. Today the S8 expressway links it quickly with the capital.
