Xinmin is a town in Chongqing municipality, in the rolling hill country north-east of the central city. The land here is a succession of ridges, shallow valleys and cultivated slopes, and on a map the town appears as a compact grouping of streets fitted into whatever flat ground the terrain allows, with roads winding away between the hills.
As in much of rural Chongqing, the surrounding countryside is intensively farmed, and small fields, reservoirs and ponds break the land into irregular shapes.
