Xinyingpan is a township in the mountains of northern Yunnan, in the high country toward the Sichuan border. Settlement here depends on the terrain. Roads run along valley floors and climb in long curves over the ridges, and the town itself sits on one of the few stretches of open, level ground in the area.
The map is therefore sparse and strongly shaped. A small cluster of streets forms the centre, and a handful of roads leave it in different directions, bending around the mountains rather than crossing them. Across the rest of the frame, isolated hamlets and farm tracks appear as small marks in wide open space.
