Xinzhou sits in the Xinding Basin of northern Shanxi, a broad plain drained by the Hutuo River and surrounded by mountain ranges. The city's map is a regular grid of wide avenues and large blocks, typical of recent Chinese urban growth, around a smaller historic centre. The prefecture named after the city includes Mount Wutai, one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
