Xuantan lies in southern Sichuan, in the hilly landscape of the Sichuan Basin. The land here is rarely flat for long: low hills, small valleys and waterways shape where roads and buildings can go. From above, the town looks like a cluster of streets set into the gaps between slopes, with farmland terraced across the surrounding hills.
Like many towns in this part of China, Xuantan grew up as a local centre for trade and farming. In recent decades, newer housing and wider roads have been added around the older core. Water plays a large part in the landscape, with rivers and ponds scattered among the fields.
