Yatağan lies in a valley in the interior of Muğla province, in southwestern Turkey, on the road between Muğla and the Aydın plain. On a map, the town stretches along that main route, and side streets climb gently toward the hills on either side. Olive groves and farmland cover the lower slopes, and pine-covered ridges rise further out.
The district is known for two very different sites. One is a large coal-fired power station, which has made Yatağan a familiar name in Turkish energy news. The other is the ancient city of Stratonikeia, in the village of Eskihisar within the district, where Hellenistic and Roman ruins lie among Ottoman-era houses.
