Yishui lies in the south of Shandong province, in the hilly Yimeng region. The town takes its name from the Yi River, which rises in these uplands and flows south through the valley. On the map, the urban area stretches along the river, with the built-up grid pressed between the water and the rising ground on either side.
Around the town, the terrain is folded and uneven. Hills, small reservoirs and cultivated terraces surround the valley floor, and country roads follow the contours rather than running straight. The contrast between the orderly town centre and the irregular landscape beyond gives the area a distinctive look from above.
