Yokota lies in the Tama area of western Tokyo and is best known for Yokota Air Base, which spreads across parts of Fussa and several neighbouring municipalities. From above, the base dominates the map. A single long runway runs roughly north to south, flanked by open ground, hangars and a wide perimeter.
Around that large open space, the typical fabric of suburban Tokyo presses in closely. Narrow residential streets, small blocks and railway lines fill every available gap. The Tama River runs a little to the west, and further out the land begins to rise toward the hills of western Tokyo. The contrast between the empty airfield and the dense suburbs is unusually sharp.
