Zacapu sits in northern Michoacán at the edge of a broad valley that was once a large marsh, the Ciénega de Zacapu. Drained in the early twentieth century, the former wetland now appears on a map as straight canals and field boundaries running away from town, a sharp contrast to the tighter streets of the centre.
On the town's edge lies the Laguna de Zacapu, a small spring-fed lake that is the source of the Río Angulo. Nearby, rough volcanic terrain known as malpaís marks the landscape, an area where archaeologists have studied early Purépecha settlement.
