Zhifeng lies in the western part of Chongqing Municipality, in the hilly Sichuan Basin landscape between the city and the plains further west. From above, the town appears as a compact built-up area following the valleys, with streets bending to fit the terrain rather than forming a strict grid. Roads leave the town in several directions, curving around hills.
The surrounding countryside is typical of this region: small terraced fields, ponds and farmhouses scattered across low, rounded hills.
