Ziyang lies in central Sichuan, roughly between Chengdu and Chongqing, in a landscape of low hills and river valleys. The Tuo River runs through the city, and on the map it is the defining feature: the urban area is shaped by its curves, with districts on both banks joined by bridges.
The surrounding land is hilly rather than flat, so outside the centre roads wind around slopes and farmland occupies the valleys between them. Newer districts introduce straighter avenues and larger blocks, which sit alongside the older streets near the river.
