Zutphen lies on the east bank of the IJssel in Gelderland, where the small River Berkel flows in from the east. It was one of the Hanseatic towns of the eastern Netherlands, and its medieval centre is remarkably intact. From above, the old town forms a dense, rounded core, bounded by water and by the remains of its fortifications.
The Walburgiskerk dominates the centre. Its library, the Librije, is one of the few surviving chained libraries in Europe, with books still attached to the desks. Stretches of town wall and towers such as the Drogenapstoren still stand, and the Berkel winds between houses on its way to the IJssel. Beyond the centre, newer districts spread out in more regular patterns.

The small Berkel enters the centre from the east and threads between buildings before it joins the IJssel. It is one of the town's most distinctive details.
