Albi's historic centre sits on a rise along the south bank of the Tarn. It is a dense cluster of narrow, irregular streets, in contrast with the more open districts beyond. At its northern edge, facing the river, stands the Cathedral of Sainte-Cécile, one of the largest brick buildings in the world.
